Chinese telecom company Zong and Pakistan’s Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a state-of-the-art 4G research lab at the university—for research and development purposes.
Zong will invest more than $1 million in establishing this lab facility while ZTE will provide technical assistance in this regard.
Under the partnership, Zong—Pakistan’s leading telecom company and the most advanced 4G service provider to give hundreds of students of LUMS—a top-ranked business management university opportunity to polish their academic endeavours on latest technological lines.
“Zong is committed to investing in Pakistan for the long term to support the Pakistani lifestyle reach new heights of development in the technology sector. Today’s MoU signing is the latest of such commitments proving its real essence for the young students of this country” said Zong’s Chairman & CEO, Mr. Liu Dianfeng.
According to him 50 percent of the 4G LTE consumption in China comprise of using services like Elearning, Education, Ebanking, etc.
Dianfeng said as the 4G handsets get cheaper in the country the penetration level of 4G LTE will increase tremendously and added “There should be tax rationalization and taxes on handsets, and telecom services should be lowered for more penetration.”
Vice Chancellor LUMS Sohail Naqvi said, “We are excited to have this opportunity to work on exciting research and development projects in the telecom sector. Having the 4G platform opens a whole new world of possibilities for the students of LUMS.”
The telecom company will assist LUMS students in their research projects and will offer them externships while the university will also use Zong’s Enterprise Solutions.
