PSF to begin World Science Day ceremonies tomorrow

by TR Pakistan

Pakistan’s apex science promotion body, the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), will initiate ceremonies in commemoration of World Science Day (WSD) on Saturday.

Celebrated every year on November 10 since this date was proclaimed World Science Day for Peace and Development by UNESCO in 2001, it is meant to highlight the importance of science in modern society and to engage the wider public in debates related to contemporary issues. This year’s theme is “science as a human right.”

Sticking to its traditional practices, the PSF will be commemorating WSD through activities such as conventions, student competitions, debates and exhibitions. These activities — including mobile science lab exhibitions and planetarium shows — will be held in all nine PSF subcenters across the country.

However, the PSF’s main event will be held on November 13 — three days after the actual science day — at their headquarters in Islamabad. At the event, the UNESCO director general will give a message related to WSD, followed by talks by various notable personalities including president of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Dr. M. Qasim Jan, and USAID advisor Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed. These sessions will be followed by distribution of certificates and cash prizes to winners of PSF’s 27th inter-board science essay and poster competitions. The event will also be attended by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Muhammad Azam Khan Swati.
