Mini-drones serving humanitarian purposes stand out at Faisalabad Science Festival

The series of science festivals underway in the country continued this week with the latest edition taking place in Faisalabad on Thursday, May 3.

The two-day festival that ended today featured interactive displays and live experiments, some of which involved robotics, sensors for disabled children, smart lighting control systems, fabric defect detectors, nutrient detectors, security doors, and soap bubble generators.

According to a statement issued on the occasion, the festival attracted a massive attendance of over 6,000 students from at least 200 government and private schools of Faisalabad district. Teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and government officials attended the festival where students exhibited more than 255 science models displaying their passion for science and technology.

The statement noted that the festival witnessed an exceptionally large participation of girls’ schools which was a sign of growing interest among women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Among the science models on display was a mini-drone developed by a group of students from a private school that could carry medicines and aid packages to people in need over a range of a few kilometers. Their wish was for hospitals and care providers to adopt the technology in medical emergencies in Pakistan. Students from the National Textile University, Faisalabad, displayed their fashion and lifestyle products created from recycled waste, encouraging visitors to adopt a greener lifestyle.

Further, the statement noted, “nations have used maths and science to empower their citizens with higher incomes, and to help grow their economies. Maths and science education is therefore integral to Pakistan’s prospects for economic growth. As a center for leading business and industrial activities, Faisalabad has a unique opportunity to display the linkage between increased investments in science education with greater economic output, through this festival.”

It called upon policy makers to provide school children with an enabling environment to pursue and absorb high-quality learning, and to focus on improvements in maths and science learning inside classrooms. It said such interventions could prove instrumental for Faisalabad as well as the Punjab province to respond to business and commercial opportunities at the moment.

The festival was organized jointly by the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the District Education Authority, the district administration, Roshan Kinara, and Pakistan Alliance for Maths and Science.

Eight science organizations from across Pakistan including Sabaq, AZ Corp, Science Fuse, Pakistan Science Foundation, Khwarizmi Science Society, Stem Visions, Learn-O-Bots and Lahore Astronomy Society also participated in the festival.
