Dr Saeed Ul Hassan, the director of Scientometrics Lab at Information Technology University, has won the Global Eugene Garfield Honorable Mention Award for Innovation in Citation Analysis.
The award is given out by Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters, to honour the memory of Dr Eugene Garfield, a pioneer in study of scientometrics.
In a statement released on the occasion, Prof. Joshua Schnell, the director of Scientific and Academic Research at Clarivate Analytics, said he hoped that this recognition of Dr Hassan’s work would bolster efforts for building a strong scientometrics community in Pakistan. “As caretakers of Dr Garfield’s legacy, we are excited to see the creative and important work that you and other early career scientists are doing with the Web of Science and other scientometric datasets,” he added.
Dr. Hassan’s research applies advanced computer-science techniques to scholarly communication data like Scopus and Web of Science citation indexes. He has also worked on social media datasets.
Dr Hassan has also contributed his expertise to national-level analyses of research excellence and international collaboration with science and technology institutes in the Middle Eastern region.
In an important work, Dr Hassan has studied the semantic context of scholarly knowledge flows. The research applies machine-learning techniques to classify citation context of a full-text corpus. He will present his findings later this year at the International Conference on Scientometric and Informetric 2017 in China.
