Clean technology and renewable energy is gaining momentum worldwide because of the increasing pressure on the limited nonrenewable resources for power, such as coal, petroleum and natural gas.
Cleantech is a broad term that encompasses products and services that aim at pollution control, energy efficiency, effective resource management and reduction, as well as carbon mitigation. Similarly, renewable energy is energy that is naturally replenished and is generated from natural resources such as wind, rain, sunlight as well as tides and geothermal heat. The global depletion of nonrenewable energy resources has put into focus the need for using cleantech and exploring renewable energy.
Pakistan’s energy crisis is now over a decade old. It has brought the economy to a near standstill, and made the cost of business exponentially higher due to the need for private energy sources like power generators and the like. However, there is a growing realisation of the need to diversify Pakistan’s energy basket.
The world’s largest solar plant is now operational in Punjab, knows as the Quaid-e- Azam Solar Power Park. There is also Jhimpir Wind Power Plant in Thatta District of Sindh and another 22 wind power projects in the pipeline. An article by a leading newspaper of Pakistan states,“wind power generation capacity of the country is projected to increase from 250 to 1,530MW within a year.” However, despite these efforts, Pakistan by and large still relies on the traditional forms of energy.
